Our Tiny House.

Last Blog is here

Many people have asked me many Questions about the Tiny house we are building.
Ranging from Why So Small, Why in general, why not just live in a RV then buy or build a "real" home, Why go to Ontario? Etc. They also request pictures. At this Current time we are not done but hopefully we will be a step closer soon.

Let me start with a little back ground.
I've always been a bit of a Hippie. That is how people Describe me anyways. I like to eat things that are freshly made from Scratch. None of that canned Crap. Which I still do eat but it's kind of unavoidable sometimes specially with a husband who adores 7/11 Honey Garlic Chicken.
My husband likes the Idea of Simpler Living, Debt/Mortgage Free Living, He is from Ontario and wants to go Home to his friends, I'm going to have a new start.
We looked at different Options for a bit.  but Decided on a Portable Tiny House.
What is a Tiny house?  Simply put it is a social movement where people are downsizing the space that they live in. The typical American home is around 2600 square feet, while the typical small or tiny house is around 100-400 square feet. Tiny Houses come in all shapes, sizes and forms but they focus on smaller spaces and simplified living.

People are joining this movement for many reasons, but the most popular reasons are because of environmental concerns, financial concerns and seeking more time and freedom.  For most Americans 1/3 to 1/2 of their income is dedicated to the roof over their heads; This translates to 15 years of working over your life time just to pay for it and because of it 76% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck.
The Husband is more about the Financial Concerns while I'm more on the environmental Concerns but we happily meet in the middle. We started this project in  September 2013. We Bought a 1971 5th Wheel Terry Trailer that is 30 Feet for 800.We had hopes of using the floor, But after we finally got it home( had to Buy new tires for it) We discovered that the seller had lied about alot of things like the fact that the floor was almost completely rotted out. They had put Ply wood and Sticky panels over it. So we tore it all down. Everything So we only had a metal from left,
Then we started to buy materials as we had the money so it was a bit slow going. First we started with Collected Old Metal Bed frames. and John welded them to the frame as well as some heavy Duty legs to make it more sturdy. I got the pleasure of using a grinder to get off as much Rust as Possible then paint it black to make it a bit more easy on the eyes.  Follewed up with Cut to Size Plywood that i covered with Tar to create a water proof barrier. Then we started on the frame... This is when we started to remember to take pictures.! I did not manage to take pictures of all the steps but it;s a start!
Of course there was may issues. Like not doing proper marking(Opps) and having to redo some things but eventually we got the ttrestlesup.
We turned to a friend of Mine to help us with the trestles and the general roofing because it is what he did for a living but It was a big Mistake! Seems he didn't want to put as much effort in as he would for real paying customers even though we were paying him!  He did help us get the start of a Tin Roof and a taller roof so we could stand in the bedroom area... But there was alot of problems we had to fix.. He also Ditched out without finishing or telling us how to do anything and in the fall when everyone was getting Busy.  Also got the plywood onto the frame!
We continued to work with the information that we could google and when we had supplies.  With help of college kid,I put the siding on! As John made up Stairs, Water Storage and installed our toilet
t

OKay so my pictures won't go where i want them too but continuing on...
This is where we are stuck at. We have not found another contractor to help us. We have had some say they will then never show up. One just led us on for three weeks, Kept telling us he would show up but was So Rude it wasn't funny.
Hopefully Tomorrow there is a guy starting. he is putting the Cap on the roof and finishing the back wall( fixing a screw up and installing the door)
Because of the wasted time from the contractors we didn't get to move in before the snow fell, We had to change our game plan.  Now we are aiming to finish the insulation, Get it closed in and install the Wood furnace So we can get rid of the Horrible rental RV( soft floors, Mice infested and no Fridge).  With it Closed in, We will have somewhere warm to Sleep then when the husband comes back from Camp, He can work on doing indoor things like building a counter, doing the walls, Installing the stove, Work on piping, Etc.
Come Spring we will hopefully install the other 3 Windows and attempt to get it road ready.
In the Future, I hope to Install Solar Power So we don't need to be plugged into a generator, As well as get a compost Toilet!

A month

My Last Blog entry is here

been a interesting week. Our rental has officially been rented for next month( October) so I have to get my butt in Gear. I have a few things packed, I have been attempting to down size which is hard to do but on September 14 is my last day of work so I will have plenty of time to get stuff done, in theory... I need to find the perfect rhythm? Maybe I'll create a schedule.  10am. Get up! 10:30 work on carrying from basement, 11:00am, Chase the young beast around the yard. lol.
Though the Cleaning part is what i Struggle with, I can't seem to get the hair to come and stay off. :/ but we moved into a barely clean place so in theory we can leave it that way. There is a rare bit to do on our Tiny home still. Since after the 3rd, My shift is being changed to the lovely 7am- 2pm shift. I will have afternoons to work on things. John will make me a list of things that he thinks I can complete on the trailer, With a little help of course.I hope to help John's dad with the wiring as well. On Wednesday, I finished putting the foam down, then Thursday, John put the wood on top, then we sat in the trailer and tried to make a awesome lay out to get the most of our space which is still in the works.   Most rooms(minus the Kitchen) have been started. The Wet room in the basement has been emptied, Though I have to go through the boxes, The trains are packed up and the wood structure is mostly taken down though we need to carry it upstairs. The Carpet room had the closets cleaned out, the coats packed, the freezer moved. And the Keep Boxes are piled up there.   Living room had all our pretty things, which has been packed up and the shelf sold, My prisms were the first to be packed up :(  The bedroom has been hardly touched but the dressers have been emptied as well as the bed side tables.

Recently home life has been a little Stressed?,unbalanced? I'm being tested for Thyroid issues though the doctor doesn't think I have it but has no grounds on why to think it.  I started a diet on Tuesday, By friday I lost 4ish Lbs which really amazed me. I was so happy that if seemed so easy unfortunately with most diets it happens easily at first but then you get stuck usually about 20 lbs from your goal. I dislike diets and they are very hard to stick by. I've done alright.
I have let my fears hold me back. I am trying hard to conquer them but problems always arise and my unstable worries blossom and fill my head til I almost really believe them. At random points,I worry that I'm the girl just to pass the time with, That when we arrive in Ontario, He'll fall in love with someone else.
In my heart I know they aren't true but my head really likes to play with me sometimes. It's taking my insecurities  and fucking with me.Anxiety which is linked to depression and vice versa both if discussed with a doctor, will be heavy medicated for the rest of ones life. Trying to heal naturally which is fully possible is harder but so much better.

For a very Long Time, I've hated exercise, no matter how hard I tried to get into, Everyone kept telling me to keep with it that I'll grow to Love it. It just never happened.I would always dread it, Try to avoid it, Sure I would do it eventually but not very happily but this time around maybe I'm ready for this. Because this past week I've enjoyed my walks, the marching. Sure I still put them off a little but it seems I always have other things to finish before I can take a moment for myself. Supper needs to be prepped up so John can eat while I'm at work, I need to go to the bank, Get groceries, Clean up after the beasts and spend time with them, the lawn needs mowing still. Then suddenly it's time for me to go to work. I've been trying to find time to shave my legs all week it seems. Sorry Got a little off track...

Sherlock is getting bigger each day and he is cute but a hand ful. John and I have agreed we will never get a puppy again. Orginally we had discussed it because Tony's dog was having puppies but then we dropped it then Tony started to Push us to take one and we ended up giving in. Sometimes I think it's his cuteness that really saves him, Each time one of us Steps in a puddle or he steals one of my shoes. The fact that he doesn't seem to pick up on the potty training thing.     The way he cries when he can't reach us.
At this Moment he is probably 20 lbs. he is getting heavy,  He doesn't bite me as much as he used to, the back of my legs finally get to heal! and he is starting to sleep through the night so when I get up, I don't have a lot of messes to clean up. like the things he shredded up while i dreamed of Chocolate covered strawberries and great naked times. lol.
His puddles and piles are getting bigger which is the worst part!

On the 16th, It was John's Birthday and I had to work so It kind of sucked, I didn't get a chance to do anything supper special and none of his presents were here yet. But Wednesday I made him a cake,
I think by the weekend, His presents finally showed up. He received two john deere hats, a selection of zombie stickers and a shirt that he really wanted. Though his reaction wasn't as I hoped, he claims that he really likes them.

I've had some Cooking fun as usual, On Saturday we enjoyed Rubens though they weren't as jam packed with Goodness as he would of liked. On Sunday, I whipped up English muffins from scratch though I did burn a couple then I turned them into corned beef eggs benedicts which John really enjoyed, That evening we had Pulled Beef Stuffed Yorkies with Creamy horseradish with a hint of mustard. :) At some point I made Steak and Mushroom pie that is a british dish. it was very Yummy, filled with beer! and my pie crust turned out amazing for once. though John only got one slice because the day he tried to take it for Lunch, he dropped it on the floor.

I never thought I'd ever own a puppy. I always pegged myself a cat person. Don't get me wrong. I still want a Cat for my very own. To make up for the cuddles that John won't give me. Lol. I also never thought I'd be shouting hey where are you taking my sock or when I stepped in a puddle, I had to hope it was a puddle of water from earlier... But over a year ago, I fell in love with someone who just happened to have a Dog who he loved very Much and had to bring when he moved in. Hey he was the first guy I offically moved in. I thought living with a man and a Dog would be easy(Boy was I wrong) Sure it had it's up and downs.  With time I found I kind of liked having a dog around except when he snores... So When my Friend Tony asked me if I would take a puppy. I reluctantly said YEs. I admit I had a lot of doubt. A puppy is a lot of commitment. Love and care. I really wasn't sure I could do it.
Yesterday we picked him up. And as we drove home, the names we had discussed and couldn't decide on just melted away and one just seemed so Perfect. And my worries and doubts melted away as we drove home with him on my lap cuddling and slowly drowsing.  Adorable.
I did question myself the first time he peed on the floor then as he squatted to take a poo and I run with him for the door(we don't make it, he got it on my foot) but as we sit and cuddle on the floor or as he tries to walk and falls over. The worries just melt away all over again.  I gave him a bath and he cried so hard and struggled. A treat wouldn't even calm him. Then he hide under the bed in the middle and pouted for a long time.

We gave our notice. At the end of September, We are out of our little rental house.   So John roughly has two Months to get everything livable in the trailer.
yesterday We picked up a lot of supplies.   today we put the tin on. So our roof is officially done. Yay. We have one window in. We may even get the siding up too. But today is so hot that john and tony haven't worked very hard or fast.

Our Vision

So I'm trying to find the best way to describe what we are doing with the Tiny house, Why we are doing it and such.  My family  Many People doesn't seem to get it.
If you've never ever really Looked at Tiny Houses or even heard of them. Google them. They are more popular then you think.
As most people know I am a Hippy... Not that I openly fully admit it otherwise some people(John) teases me about it, It isn't a thing to be ashamed of.

Meeting John has done me a lot of good though some think he hasn't. He has let me blossom, and fully show my colors and do what makes me Happy.  In the past, I had trouble coming out of my shell and doing what I really wanted.  Past Relationship: Man who preferred A box of mac N Cheese compared to the real Stuff, It really makes your creativity stop when you make a new thing and your partner won't eat it and didn't approve on how I got to be at times. John isn't huge on some of things I make. But He lets me go and go and go. I really enjoy making things from scratch and chemical Free. Learning to make things from scratch.

Tiny Houses are affordable. By the time our home will be finished it will be about 8K. But the Best part, N
o mortgage, No Debt!  I do have debt but that is from the Car I own. I have not finished paying it off quite yet. But when we are able to move into our tiny house, it will eliminate most a large portion of what we pay per month(Rent, Power, Water, Energy).
We are planning on Living as off Grid as Possible.  John is learning about using Wind Power as well as Solar power.  When we own land, We plan to have some of everything.  Chickens(eggs, meat, Sales), Dexter Cows( Milk,Meat, Sales), Meat Rabbits( maybe, Unsure if we will like rabbit).  We would like to build a Green house as soon as possible so we can make our grow year longer if not year long.
The Fun part, Most of these things are fairly easy and not insane to expensive to set up. By using time, we can build a Chicken coop with Skids, As well as a rabbit Cage. The Green house can be scrape wood, skids,  PVC pipe even but I have been reading about different ways to build green houses. Then we can offerCSA's.  If our land is large enough, we will also hopefully have a community of sorts.

Running to the store for milk will a be a thing of the past.  Some of things we will still need to buy( toliet paper, salt, sugar, flour...chocolate) But when we are set up properly,We won't need the store as much as we used to.
On my To Do List is learning to make cheese. Like Cheddar, I already know how to make cream cheese, farm cheddar and Mozza. I've read about rennet and hopefully will put it to practice on how to make plant rennet not animal rennet.
Make Water Kefir as well as normal kefir, Make more flavors of Soda, Master keeping alive Sour Dough Starter...  Etc.

John has started a new Job and he is so so so so much happier. The hours are long and it makes it harder to see each other which really sucks but it is worth it because he is happy and the money is a bit better from Colonay.  But it gives me more of a reason to spend a fair bit of time in my kitchen creating Fun Things! In the past Two weeks~ Gluten and lactose free Banana chocolate muffins, brownies, Cinnamon rice krispies, Peanut butter Rice Krispies, Apple and mixed Summer Berry Pie and Mini Pies,   Reuben "hot pockets" ,  Peanut and Chocolate Granola bars, salisbury Steaks, Stuffed pizza burgers( BP's copycat but better) with a lot more to Come.... Cheese Burger "hot pocket" with pickle and all!, more granola, Cookie Dough Muffins. Most of them are made and put away by 12:00pm of the day. Silly Closing shifts.

Oranges!

So last week. Kari at work was going to throw out this huge bag of oranges. That weren't even rotten in any form or way. They had sat in the fridge since the day we opened so that was her motivation to toss them out. But I saw a window of opportunity to use every single piece of those oranges so I brought home these oranges that then sat on my counter for almost two weeks... The first week in. I made these awesome. Orange "brownies" with a strawberry Orange Glaze that are still insanely moist after sitting for a week.  The recipe I used is here . The original recipe is made with Lemon but oranges work just as well.! In fact that website is packed Full of so many neat recipes that I think it's worth a better look at.
Though John hasn't had a appetite so I haven't had much of reason to really cook so I have not been cooking much lately.  This week I finally dealt with the rest of the oranges. Mostly. I still have a portion that I have not used yet,
Last night I sat down and zested over 30 oranges. I chopped it finer and set it out to Dry. Dried Zest is wonderful to use in recipes when you don't have fresh orange on hand.  I then Peeled the oranges and chopped the rest of the peelings into pieces. Some were laid out to dry( they will be submerged into a big bottle of Cheap Vodka. Half will become orange Oil and the other half will be orange extract!)   Some of the Peels were shoved into over 6 cups of Vinegar where it will sit for a few weeks then It will be my nice citrus cleaner!.A small amount was covered with about 2 cups of olive oil. which will probably be gifted to my brother with a bit of the Orange extract as a gift because he cooks often and would enjoy it.
What I have left is the actual Oranges which John and I don't actually want to eat.  I'm not 100% sure what do with them.  I did read I could freeze them then use them on salads... But we all know how I feel about salad.
Last night John kept looking in the fridge so I just knew it was time to do some real cooking!. And I went with it.
First I made up a batch of Black Refried Beans! I made up a small Batch of Crispy Hash browns with Chunks of Ham. As I waited for them to cook, I made up a batch of Tortilla Shells and Fried up some Ground beef with tomato and Taco seasoning. I then turned them into Beef and refried Bean Quesadillas with a side of hash browns.  Instead of just picking. My Love consumed two and a quarter of them and a generous serving of the hash browns. I was beyond thrilled.
Which in Turn has given me the motivation to make Buns today. and a nice Flax, oat, bran Bread.  Which I'll probably have all baked up in time for when john emerges from bed at like 2.lol. Okay I hope not but who knows.
Unfortunately I have never found a recipe for bread that I adore and so I tend to switch recipes very often. I linked to the recipes that I am using today.  The last Oat bread I made was tasty but when I put it in the oven, It fell then expanded and fell over the edges. Maybe I'm just to rough? Who knows.  but both doughs are looking some what promising so far.  Since I didn't make the doughs at the same time. I have to close all my windows so my house stays warm and draft free...I don't look forward to it

My Shifts at work have been changed again. On thursday I went to a friends grad party but to be able to attend I had to switch shifts with someone, which means I got to do the 7am til 2pm shift.    waking up at 5:30 is not pleasant but I kicked that shifts ass. I had soup ready for 7:15 due to my awesome prep skills. lol. By 10 I was wandering around.Bored out of my mind but I watched Chopped for a bit. Then I had 5 orders at lunch. 3 monte cristos, one burger and a grilled ham and cheese.  Easy.  I finished them quick and needed no help which made Kari decide that I should work  the morning shift again. So now every Thursday I get to work the morning which in turns means I don't have to work Ladies night. Bonus. lol
Because I dislike the nights that we have events because it means i end up being there past 10:30 which isn't cool.
As well as switching my thursday. She made it that I work every other Sunday. Which means every two weeks. I only have one day off. While the other lady always gets two days off and every second week she gets three days off.
I question how that makes sense. But what ever.

As Most know. I take a string of pills. All which have a purpose.I'll go through them in a second. But for the past two? months I can't seem to bring my self to take them, Even though I look at them nightly as I brush my teeth.
Every morning i have liquid Lemon Cod Oil- helps brain functions and memory
Every Night-
Iron- I have low iron which makes it so I cannot donate blood
Cal Mag D( calcium, magnesium and vitamin D) magnesium is known to help with depression, anxiety,  and it's supposed to help you go regularly.
Vitamin D- The vitamin that you soak in a lot of  from the sun. it also is known for helping with depression and just making one feel happier.
Prenatal Pills- No I'm not pregnant. When I remember to take these bad boys. They make my hair and nails grow quicker and thicker. meaning my weak ass nails don't bend or break as easy.
Lavender- Though I dislike the smell, it helps relax and helps one sleep a little deeper
                    Garcinia Cambogia- appetite control

I think originally I kind of stopped taking them because when I added in the Cod Oil, it made me have upset stomachs and fish Burps.(Yuck) But I also took most of my pills at the same time.   If I actually get around to it. I could/will set up proper times for pills so they won't affect each other and make me have gross burps.

The Challenge!

I know it hasn't been that long since my last Blog but I had to add this in. I really did. I swear.

I've given John some Motivation to go to work on time.. Because he's always at least 15 minutes late. Which drives me nuts and his bosses aren't to found of it either.
I told him I'd make him a awesome meal if he went to work on time each day.  If he's late he doesn't get a amazing meal.  He'd get maybe cereal or a smokie.
Today I made Pasta Sauce and Garlic Sticks. Really Yummy garlic sticks. well at least I thought so( John likes them). The garlic sticks were coated with a herbed parmesan garlic Butter... Enough Said. Amazing.
Tuesday: Mushroom and Cheese Stuffed Burgers( John really enjoys the burgers i make,Seems I recall John asking for some Private time with his Burger while kissing it..) With Fresh made hamburger buns.
Wednesday: Herbed Sour Dough pepperoni, Mushroom and pineapple pizza
Thursday: Quiche- Chicken,potato and onion
Friday: Lasagna and Ceaser
Saturday- BBQ Pulled Pork, Roasted Veggies, Butternut Squash, Creamy Nutmeg Mushrooms.

I don't have anything planned for the next week but I will think it over and in theory think up something. maybe meat loaf? Calzone? Salad....

Tuesday: Beggers Colabac

I'll think about it Longer I guess.
Lately since I've gotten the 2-9. It's a rare thing if I get back by 9:45. Then I finish making supper then it basically we go to bed because John has to get up early. I barely get to spend time with him. It makes me feel down.  He's not much of a texter so I don't hear from him during the day either. I don't like it. I really enjoy seeing the man I love. and I hate that I only get to see him Saturday evening, Sunday and monday morning for a bit. At work it's a busy month so Kari asked Tina and I if we could take more shifts. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday I already work over time. But I agreed that I could help on Saturdays But I down right refused to work Sunday. I told them it's my Only day to see  my Jobn and she was fine with that. At the end of June they are supposed to be going over my file and seeing if I deserve a raise.
I had to go to Food Safe on Saturday. It really sucked and was the same course from when I took it in 2006, Even the same test. I finished the quiz kind of fast and I feel confident that I did well but who knows. I don't think it matters because I had passed it when I was younger.
I got a call from Cormicks which I had applied at when I first left Mr. Ribs. They wanted me to come out to Epson? Alberta ASAP because they needed a flagger which is cool. But to get there then get a hotel room is kind of expensive. and financially I can't afford that and adding Stress to our situation and distance? It really would not work for me.  I told him if he has a Saskatchewan Job I should be able to make it happen but I will probably be forgotten about.

Today I am making a smores cake. Yes I've made something of the sort in the past. a four layer cake with graham cake, fudge cake and a marshmellow icing. but this is. grahams cake with no flour, it's made with Graham crumbs and stuff.... I baked it in a spring form pan. Next I'll be mixing up a batch of Marshmellow and Pouring it directly on top of the cake. letting it settle then browning it quickly in the oven to get that roasted marshmellow taste. then pouring melted ganche on it. The cake is cooling now. It is very Moist.
I mixed up some Pie crust which is cooling in the fridge, Next I am making up a Mixed Berry Pie.Both Should be crazy good. Hopefully.

Interesting week

As usual my last Blog

It has been a interesting week.  Orginally it was planned that I would have a week of 2:00-9:00 pm then a week of 7:00-2:00. But after the first week we quickly discovered who worked best where.  Tina isn't amazing alone and she tends to like to do things her own way which is a no no. Carrie the women who covers the days off, isn't any better. She was supposed to cover Tuesday Men's night at the golf course and the manager ended up doing most of the work because She had panicked.  It was only 8 people but what ever.  So now Tina has Monday and Tuesday off. Then Works 7-2 Wed to Friday then Saturday and Sunday she worked 2-9. Carrie works 7-2 Saturday to Tuesday.    So I worked Monday to Friday 2-9. and have the weekends off.Which is such a rare thing. It really makes me happy.
This weekend was my first weekend off that i didn't need to beg for or trade things for. It was Nice.   Well sort of. the Boss asked me to work Saturday evening as the front staff meaning I was to run the register and the Beer Cart. I was excited for the beer cart.  But it was a slow evening because of the weather and I only made about 12 for tips.   My First stop on the cart. was for a group of six that were already fairly drunk. They ordered two whiskey and ginger ale with Lime, Two Vodka/Pepsi and Lime, a water and a bag of chips.I was so Nervous and one of the guys noticed. I was so Nervous that I was shaking. He made me stop what I was doing and hold up my hands for everyone to see how bad I was shaking. I got a hug for it. lol.  I managed to forgot to charge them somewhere. We were out for $2. There was another group. two guys who both wanted Whiskey/pepsi. Then he had two Whiskey Shots. He insisted one was for me. It made me laugh.  He was very Very Drunk though.

Today We made it to Saskatoon. And it turned out to be a very Good Day. I spent time on Kijiji yesterday looking for Windows and I hit the jack pot. We looked at them today. Picked out 5 good ones. Doubled paned, PVC and stuff, just need to replace the screens. It only cost $95 for all of them!  We had gone to Saskatoon thinking it would cost at least 400 for used windows. We didnt even want to Think about how much it would cost for new.  He asked us to make a offer and John was like Uhh( later he said he was going to say 300!) the Man said here I'll start. 75 for four. We quickly agreed then we found another window, he only wanted 10 for it. I didn't have any change so we gave him 90 for it all. We saved so much. We picked up three water storage bins for 50.  We went over to the Ex Bf's(Tony) house. He donated two boxes of nails and lent us his air nail gun!. The two Boxes is about 10 Thousand nails a box.! I won't say no to that. Then headed home. Where we picked up some much needed groceries. There has not been much in the fridge put milk. I've been digging out things from the bottom of the freezer and adding potatoes to it for the past week!.

Though on Saturday while John was at work, Some one that he helped at work gave him a flat(30) of Farm eggs. It was a great surprise!.

In the Dog world. I have two Clients. Rufus and Tucker. One is a large dog and one is small. Rufus is walked four days and Tucker for three. but I earn the same amount for Both.  I take them both out to Carolime's farm and they run and fight with her Four dogs.

We are getting a puppy eventually. It's in the making. Literally.  Stripe is due on June 25. So in theory the end of August? Stripe is a Pure Black Lab. A gorgeous Gal. I spent the whole summer with her last year.  Then the father is a Rotti.   I get Second pick from the batch. My John wants a girl and I kind of wanted a boy. But I guess we will see who we notice first.  I'm a bit worried about raising a puppy. they are a lot of work.   But I am going to Socialize it a lot. makes sure it's used to all dogs so it hopefully stays friendly.  It can come to the farm four days a week. I dread training it. I dont have a clue how to train a dog.
